“PAH” emission bands in selected planetary nebulae: a study of the behaviour with gas phase C/O ratio

چکیده
Airborne and space-based low-resolution spectroscopy in the 1980s discovered tantalizing quantitative relationships between the gas phase C/O abundance ratio in planetary nebulae (PNe) and the fractions of total far-infrared luminosity radiated by the 7.7 and 11.3 μm bands (the C=C stretch and C-H bend, respectively), of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Only a very small sample of nebulae was studied in this context, limited by airborne observations of the 7.7 μm band, or the existence of adequate IRAS Low Resolution Spectrometer data for the 11.3 μm band. To investigate these trends further, we have expanded the sample of planetaries available for this study using Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) low-resolution spectra secured with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) and the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS). The new sample of 43 PNe, of which 17 are detected in PAH emission, addresses the range from C/O = 0.2−13 with the objective of trying to delineate the pathways by which carbon dust grains might have formed in planetaries. For the 7.7-μm and 11.3-μm bands, we confirm that the ratio of band strength to total infrared luminosity is correlated with the nebular C/O ratio. Expressed in equivalent width terms, the cut-on C/O ratio for the 7.7μm band is found to be 0.6 0.4 , in good accord with that found from sensitive ground-based measurements of the 3.3-μ band too.

Evolution of PAH Features from Proto- to Planetary Nebulae
With the aim to investigate the overall evolution of UIR band features with hardening of UV radiation (increase of the star’s effective temperature) we have analysed ISO spectra for 32 C-rich stars: 20 proto-planetary nebulae and 12 planetary nebulae with Wolf-Rayet central stars. In this contribution we discuss variations in the peak position of UIR bands among analysed objects, and demonstrat...
متن کاملDesign of a Supercritical Fluid Expansion Source for Gas-Phase Spectroscopy of Fullerenes
Introduction The fullerenes, including C 60 and C 70 , were discovered by Kroto et al. [1] in 1985 during experiments meant to simulate the chemistry of carbon stars. It was initially believed that these molecules would be formed primarily in carbon-rich, hydrogen-poor regions where formation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) would be limited. This hypothesis seemed to be supported by the fir...
متن کاملThe shape and strength of circumstellar PAH emission bands
We discuss the shape and strength of the emission bands observed in Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) spectra of three carbon-rich evolved stars (Beintema et al. 1996a). The emission bands, due to stretching and bending modes of CC and C-H bonds in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), show large difference in strength and shape, depending on the excitation temperature and size distributio...
متن کاملNarrow - Band Imaging of Bipolar Planetary Nebulae
We present near-IR narrow-band continuum-subtracted images in the H2 2:122 m, and Br 2:166 m emission lines for a sample of 15 bipolar planetary nebulae. H2 emission was definitely detected for most of the objects in this sample (13 out of 15). The very high H2 detection rate supports the idea that bipolar planetary nebulae have important reservoirs of molecular material and offer suitable phys...
متن کاملSequence Structure Emission in the Red Rectangle Bands
We report high resolution (R∼37,000) integral field spectroscopy of the central region (r<14 arcsec) of the Red Rectangle nebula surrounding HD44179. The observations focus on the λ5800Å emission feature, the bluest of the yellow/red emission bands in the Red Rectangle. We propose that the emission feature, widely believed to be a molecular emission band, is not a molecular rotation contour, bu...
